The only natural geographic features shown are Lake Ontario, Irondequoit Bay, Genesee Valley Park and the River twisting through the center. The Erie Canal cuts through Genesee Valley Park at the bottom, and defines much of Rochester's border to the south/west.
At the heart of the city is Downtown Rochester, straddling the Genesee River and perched at the top of High Falls. You may have to squint to see them, but even Rochester's downtown districts are represented here – from the Cascade District to the East End. Neighborhood names are hand lettered to give each one its own distinct personality. Major streets that separate neighborhoods are also labeled.
This is truly a 'living map' of our city. Rochester is a reflection of its neighborhoods – both the people who settled them, and those who live there now. They have changed over time—some more than others—and they will continue to change. That is a beautiful thing.
